Busoni brings Bach’s organ writing to the modern piano. In BWV 564, the Adagio pairs a sustained melodic line with a steady bass before turning to striking dissonances.

The closing fugue sets a buoyant, interrupted subject against a more continuous counter-line: listen for the way the voices complete one another.

IIIFEATURED RECORDING

Rachmaninoff

Piano Sonata No. 2
in B-flat minor, Op. 36

About the work

Written in 1913 and substantially revised in 1931, the Second Sonata joins three movements through returning musical ideas. The opening’s turbulence gives way to a slower central movement before the music returns to the brilliance of the finale.

The revision cuts and thins the original’s dense piano writing. Both versions are composer-authorized; the edition represented by this recording artwork has not been confirmed.
